Why is it that we all want what we don’t have? Girls with straight hair want curly hair. Girls with dark eyes want light eyes. Girls with light skin want darker skin. Girls with thin statures want curvier ones…and the list goes on and on…
Why is this? Why can’t we be happy with how we look? It’s almost like we want the exact opposite of what we have. There has to be some type of psychology around this thought process, and it definitely affects us all. Why can’t we be happy with how we are and what we have? Growing up, I would always make negative comments about how I looked, and my mom would say, “You know, that is a slap in the face to God, right? He made you exactly how you’re meant to be, and you’re beautiful just the way you are.”
Even though I would hear that on the reg, it never changed my thought process. I continually thought negatively about how I looked…call it “being a teenager” or growing pains…whatever it was, it was wrong. This is one of the reasons why I write these blog posts, I want every person — girl or boy — to know that you are beautiful and that you are perfect just the way you are. It’s important to keep in mind that everything we have is a gift, and those gifts should not be taken for granted. Also my friends, when those negative thoughts creep into that beautiful mind of yours, redirect them as a positive thought. For example…if “I hate my eye color” is thought of…redirect it as “I’m so grateful that I have eyes that see.” It may sound silly, but it will help those negative thoughts stay at bay.
Everything we have is a gift and those gifts should not be taken for granted.
The point is my friends, be grateful for how you look. Even though we all know that it’s the inner beauty that’s what’s up…be grateful. You are beautiful. Don’t compare yourself to others, and allow your light to shine. Now go get em, you beautiful thing, you.
